So how is your Spanish exposure going? Is everything going well or perhaps like some people you are worrying that your might “lose your English”. So is it possible to lose your English?
Is it possible to expose yourself to so much Spanish that you forget your mother language Specifically English?
If you are reading this English must probably be your first or at least your second language. So first off let me tell you that indeed one might lose his ability to speak his native language and yes it is possible to have your native language or any language you are already familiar of today rust out to the point of losing your fluency to that language.
BUT!! That would take at least several years of non exposure which means you never heard a word of that language again. Imagine losing your fluency after millions and millions of hours of native input for your native language since birth? It takes tremendous time but YES IT IS POSSIBLE AND IT HAPPENS. My grandma lives in the US for decades now and has not heard any of our native language since then. Right now you can’t talk to her in our native language anymore.
BUT THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR ENGLISH!!!
Yes it isn’t. It is possible to lose your native tongue due to non-exposure if your native tongue is German
. It is possible to lose your native tongue due to non-exposure if your native tongue is Russian,
. It is possible to lose your native tongue due to non-exposure if your native tongue is Scheck,
. It is possible to lose your native tongue due to non-exposure if your native tongue is Chinese, Cantonese, Hindu, Greek, whatever!! But it is definitely NOT possible to lose your ENGLISH!!!
Hey Mags you crazy! You said that all languages share the same learning dynamics! What makes English different!?
First of all English isn’t called universal language for nothing. Everywhere you are you WILL hear or at least be exposed to English at a certain frequency whether you like it or not. True it is possible to NOT LEARN English but if you already knew English it isn’t possible to rot it so much that you unlearn it.
Heck even if you go to China you would get some English input. By the way you should first learn how to hitchhike all the way to China!
Unless you go to north pole for several decades – and even Santa knows English – oh wait: is Santa in the north or south pole? Nevermind!
And since you are reading this site I would safely assume that you are in at least an English-Speaking country or you have access to the English-speaking part of the internet.
Point taken: you can’t hide from English for so long – long enough to unlearn it no sir! You have to go to another planet to do that. And perhaps even by then Aliens would also know English. English is my second language and to be honest I should worry more about me “unlearning” my native non-English first language due to having too much Spanish exposure but that will only happen if I move to Spain where I would be exposed to more Spanish and a little English for that to happen.
you can’t hide from English for so long – long enough to unlearn it no sir
So don’t worry about losing your English, man! You NEVER WILL EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO! Keep up the Spanish Input exposure to the max! Que Dios os bendiga.
